A touch of Tiffany, a touch of Studio 54, and certainly Donald Claflin (IYKYK)
This design comes from the grand finale of Claflin’s Tiffany era, and it’s got all the 1970s attitude. Claflin went big, bold, and all-in on the gold. On the ear, they somehow manage to look both totally polished and just a little bit rebellious. Very seventies, very fabulous.
Donald Claflin at Tiffany & Co.
Donald Claflin was one of the great imaginative talents in the field of American jewelry during the second half of the 20th century. Claflin was born in 1935 in Massachusetts and studied at the Parsons School of Design; he began his career in illustration and textiles before moving into fine jewelry. He worked for David Webb and then with Van Cleef & Arpels before joining Tiffany & Co. in 1965, where Walter Hoving recognized and supported his outstanding creative instincts.
At Tiffany, Claflin became one of the store's principal designers during the 1960s and 1970s. Although his jewelry could be fantastical—featuring dragons, birds, flowers, fruits, and other fanciful figures made from precious stones, enamel, and gold—he was just as interested in movement, convertibility, and strong sculptural form. Modern-day accounts praised the wit and imagination displayed in his work, and Tiffany provided him with access to outstanding stones and artisans who could turn even his most ambitious concepts into jewelry.
He remained at Tiffany until 1977, and as a result, pieces from that period have become increasingly desirable to collectors who know that Claflin was one of the major American jewelry designers of that era.
The X earrings originate from that notable chapter in Tiffany's history, and examples of this crossover model date from about 1976 to 1977, which puts the design toward the end of Claflin's time at Tiffany.
