Ring FAQ

Why choose an antique or vintage engagement ring - what makes them so special?

Its got soul.  A modern diamond may sparkle like the perfect gem it is, but an antique ring tells a story. These rings have history—decades, maybe even centuries, of romance, adventure, and mystery wrapped around them. Imagine all the love stories they’ve witnessed.   A modern cut diamond just doesn’t have that same magic.

Its one of a kind.  If you're looking for something unique, antique and vintage rings are the way to go. No cookie-cutter designs - just intricate craftsmanship, hand-cut diamonds, and designs you won’t find on every other social media engagement post.

Its the ethical, green choice.  Antique rings are the ultimate in sustainable jewelry.

Its got that certain intangible je-ne-sais-quoi.  There’s just something incredibly romantic about a ring that has lived through history. Decades and decades of being fiercely loved has given it character, charm, and that certain intangible quality that is hard to put into words.  Its history.  On your finger.

Is it OK to look at engagement rings together with my partner?

Yes! This is actually becoming more and more common as more women choose to become involved in the process.  This ensures that she gets the ring she wants, and at the same time, gives him the confidence to shop for an choose a ring he knows she will love, making the process stress-free for all both giver and receiver.

Are your engagement rings conflict-free?

Antique and vintage engagement diamonds are conflict-free because they were mined and cut long before modern diamond controversies even existed. These gems predate the whole "blood diamond" issue, making them the ultimate ethical choice.  Choosing vintage means recycling a piece of history instead of fueling new demand.

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

For decades, DeBeers led everyone to believe that a "respectable" number is the equivalent of 2 month's salary.  Let's not buy into that please.  Please feel free to spend what feels right to you.  It's not necessarily what you can afford, but what you and your intended (if this discussion has been had) feel is the right size and budget.

What are your most popular engagement ring styles?

Simple and understated solitaires, mostly in yellow gold, are very very popular.  Most women are opting for rings that have cleaner, almost fluid lines. Rings with wider shanks are also being requested more and more.

Do your engagement rings come with a Gemological Certificate?

Where we can unmount a diamond without causing damage to both diamond and setting, we will send the diamond to the Gemological Institute of America for a diamond grading. In those cases where this is not possible, a third party qualitative is instead included with the listing.

What finger do you wear an engagement ring on?

The ancient Romans believed that the "vena amoris" (a.k.a. the vein of love) ran directly from the left ring finger to the heart.  While that sounds very romantic, science has later proven this to be untrue but by then, the tradition had already stuck.

Fast forward a few centuries, and now slipping a ring on that finger is the universal symbol for being spoken for.
