Why choose an antique or vintage engagement ring - what makes them so special?
Its got soul. A modern diamond may sparkle like the perfect gem it is, but an antique ring tells a story. These rings have history—decades, maybe even centuries, of romance, adventure, and mystery wrapped around them. Imagine all the love stories they’ve witnessed. A modern cut diamond just doesn’t have that same magic.
Its one of a kind. If you're looking for something unique, antique and vintage rings are the way to go. No cookie-cutter designs - just intricate craftsmanship, hand-cut diamonds, and designs you won’t find on every other social media engagement post.
Its the ethical, green choice. Antique rings are the ultimate in sustainable jewelry.
Its got that certain intangible je-ne-sais-quoi. There’s just something incredibly romantic about a ring that has lived through history. Decades and decades of being fiercely loved has given it character, charm, and that certain intangible quality that is hard to put into words. Its history. On your finger.
Is it OK to look at engagement rings together with my partner?
Yes! This is actually becoming more and more common as more women choose to become involved in the process. This ensures that she gets the ring she wants, and at the same time, gives him the confidence to shop for an choose a ring he knows she will love, making the process stress-free for all both giver and receiver.
Are your engagement rings conflict-free?
Antique and vintage engagement diamonds are conflict-free because they were mined and cut long before modern diamond controversies even existed. These gems predate the whole "blood diamond" issue, making them the ultimate ethical choice. Choosing vintage means recycling a piece of history instead of fueling new demand.
How much should I spend on an engagement ring?
For decades, DeBeers led everyone to believe that a "respectable" number is the equivalent of 2 month's salary. Let's not buy into that please. Please feel free to spend what feels right to you. It's not necessarily what you can afford, but what you and your intended (if this discussion has been had) feel is the right size and budget.
What are your most popular engagement ring styles?
Simple and understated solitaires, mostly in yellow gold, are very very popular. Most women are opting for rings that have cleaner, almost fluid lines. Rings with wider shanks are also being requested more and more.
What are your most popular engagement ring eras?
Art deco engagement rings rank very high on the popularity scale. The beautiful, intricate and mostly geometric-themed motifs from the era also remain sought-after. This is followed closely by the Edwardian era with its romantic leanings, and rare pieces from the Victorian era. Having said all that, mid-century era rings are slowly getting notice as well.

What finger do you wear an engagement ring on?
The ancient Romans believed that the "vena amoris" (a.k.a. the vein of love) ran directly from the left ring finger to the heart. While that sounds very romantic, science has later proven this to be untrue but by then, the tradition had already stuck.
Fast forward a few centuries, and now slipping a ring on that finger is the universal symbol for being spoken for.
What should be worn at the base of the finger - wedding band or engagement ring?
Tradition says the band goes closest to the heart, symbolizing eternal love and commitment. By stacking the wedding ring first, followed by the engagement ring, the wedding band stays closest to that romantic symbolism. Today, however, it’s not just about history—it’s also about personal preferences and lifestyle and we find many of our clients wearing them on their right hand as well. How do I care for and maintain an antique or vintage engagement ring?
While its not easy to damage gold, platinum, and most especially diamonds, a certain level of care needs to be taken. When doing heavy physical activities (gardening, working out, working with heavy machinery), it would be best if you take your ring off. I would also suggest that you don't wear your ring in bed, nor in the shower (most especially swimming). You can whack your hand on a hard surface while asleep, and when you bathe or shower with your ring on, it accumulates soap, lotion etc which would impact how the diamonds sparkle. In addition, grime, over time, can cause prongs to lift (and the diamond to loosen).

Can antique and vintage rings be re-sized?
For the most part, yes! However, there are some exceptions to this: shanks with pave set diamonds rings, with intricate shanks (engravings, filigree, etc.), or essentially any ring where sizing can pose a risk to the ring's overall appearance or structure.
How do I determine the right ring size?
The best way to do this is really to be sized by a professional. This can be done at a mall jewelry store, or your local jeweler. For those who are unable to do this with their partner, you can also perhaps "borrow" a ring she wears on that finger and get that ring measured for size.

How can I insure my jewels?
We recommend Jeweler's Mutual or Chubb's - both offer stand-alone policies for jewelry. You may also include a jewelry rider on your homeowner's policy or renter's insurance. I cannot stress how important it is to insure your jewelry - you simply cannot say what might happen (theft, damage, loss, etc.).
