Cartier has always had a playful streak, and this little guy is proof. An 18kt gold chick is busy breaking out of its white enamel eggshell, complete with a diamond eye, a red enamel mouth and finely textured gold feathers. Those jagged shell edges are part of the design, and they give the whole thing a sweet, storybook feel.
Cartier came back to the hatching chick more than once, from the early 1900s through its whimsical mid-century animal jewels (some 1950s versions hatched from carved agate or chalcedony eggs with ruby, sapphire or emerald eyes). Ours is signed Cartier, marked 18K and numbered 1943, and based on its construction likely dates to the 1950s-60s.
