A STUNNING late Victorian crescent brooch set with a graduated row of old-cut diamonds, each stone individually claw-set in yellow gold. The diamonds step down in size toward each point of the crescent, giving the piece a balanced feel, while the warm yellow gold setting keeps it feeling rich (also pretty rare to find this in yellow gold!).
In the second half of the 19th century, crescent-shaped jewelry became particularly popular since celestial designs were associated with ideas of femininity, change, intuition, and good luck. During the Victorian period, diamond crescents were worn in the form of brooches, hair clips and pendants and were usually set with old mine or old European cut diamonds which gave them a softer, more romantic sparkle than that of modern stones.
