ENGAGEMENT RING TALES

Mary-Kate Olsen

This November marks a decade since a former child star said "I do" to a French banker, and we're celebrating with a look at one of the most coveted vintage engagement rings.

Timeless Charm: A Vintage Cartier Engagement Ring

This upcoming November marks ten years since Mary-Kate Olsen—businesswoman, fashion designer, twin to Ashley Olsen, and former child actor known for her role in Full House—said, “you got it dude” (or more likely “I do”) to French Banker Olivier Sarkozy. Despite their split in 2020, we really couldn’t resist discussing one of the most replicated and beloved vintage engagement rings.

As you probably could have guessed, we go absolutely nuts for engagement rings like this: a 1953 Cartier original! This luxurious high-profile gal is a 4-carat Euro-cut diamond surrounded by a halo of 16 invisible-set calibre-cut sapphires with 1.5ctw of diamonds making up the “petals” on the side profile of this beauty. Show us a ring more divine, we’ll wait.

For those wondering where this regal ring came from, it was previously owned by a jewelry collector from Tenessee and sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $81,250. While it’s certainly not the most expensive engagement ring we’ve seen, we’d put it in our unofficial top 5 for most unique! It doesn’t seem possible to design a ring that so perfectly reflects and complements Olsen’s eclectic style and adoration for rare vintage finds, so we do wonder what’s become of this antique gem since the split.
