The ancient Egyptians believed that the fourth finger on the left hand had a vein that directly connected to the heart, which came to be known as the vena amoris or the "vein of love." This belief led to the tradition of wearing a ring on this finger to symbolize the enduring love and commitment between spouses. Throughout history, wedding bands have been made from a variety of materials, including gold, silver, and even bone. They have been adorned with intricate designs, gemstones, and engravings, reflecting the cultural and personal preferences of different civilizations.

Today, wedding bands continue to hold a sentimental place in marriage ceremonies across various cultures and are cherished symbols of love, unity, and commitment.

So how does one choose the perfect band?

These days, bands come in (literally) all shapes and sizes. They come in all the metals (even wood and rubber!). You may want ones adorned with diamonds, gemstones, or perhaps in plain precious metal? The choice is, really and truly, up to one's personal tastes, preferences, and lifestyle.

Do you prefer a cohesive, traditional pairing?

You can choose to match your solitaire's diamond shape or cut with your wedding band - that makes for a traditional, timeless look. Next, and perhaps even more important:

Proportions are everything. It's not always having the biggest diamonds in your wedding band - its about how the size of those stones sit next to your engagement ring.

Your wedding band should complement your engagement ring beautifully and proportionally - making sure the band does not overpower your band on the finger.

So while yo' girl over here loves her big and bold bands, I say look at your pairing with a careful eye - the band ought to let your ER sing, and her role is to be its back up dancer.

Now, going back to your lifestyle

By this I mean - are you handsy - do you work a lot with your hands? Are you a sculptor, tennis player, gardener, grave digger, personal trainer, busy mom? These are practical considerations as styles like eternity bands or pave-set diamonds would likely not be your friend unless you can commit to taking precautions while doing certain activities. The next best thing? Half-eternity bands or half-hoop styles would be my go-to. You get the look without the worry (*insert mic drop here*)

The no-fuss, always timeless option

This is, of course, the plain gold or platinum band. Lately, I am digging the vintage wide bands paired with eternity bands - I find the combo bold and full of quiet strength. Having said that, that vibe is not for everyone and the 1.80-2.20mm width is one I gravitate towards - perfect for stacking yet still present on the finger when worn solo.
