The design draws inspiration from zellige, the traditional Moroccan mosaic tilework known for its intricate geometric patterns.  For centuries, artisans in Morocco have hand-cut small, glazed tiles to form elaborate repeating patterns that decorate palaces, courtyards, and fountains.  Zellige's work is celebrated for its harmony of symmetry and subtle imperfection.

Paloma Picasso translated this ancient decorative language into jewelry during her celebrated collaborations with Tiffany & Co. in the 1980s and 1990s, when architectural and global design influences were becoming a major theme in fine jewelry.  Her Zellige pieces echo the geometry of the original tile patterns, transforming architectural motifs into wearable sculpture.
