Vintage Large Silver Mesh Scarf, by Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co.

Elsa Peretti's Mesh Scarf necklace?  Instantly iconic. She basically took sterling silver and said, why not make it act like silk? The result: a necklace that's soft, slinky, and drapes around your neck like it's auditioning for a spot in your closet.  This is Peretti doing what she does best—making something look effortless, sexy, and just a little bit magic.

In 1974, Peretti joined Tiffany & Co. and soon changed how modern jewelry was designed by introducing organic shapes and making serious use of sterling silver. The Mesh collection drew on her years in Jaipur, India, where she became interested in traditional metalwork and the idea of making a precious metal move like cloth.  According to Tiffany, the mesh is intricately woven from an ultra-fine precious metal so it flows like water and hangs like silk; Peretti said in 1975 that her experience in Jaipur led to the idea of a small gold scarf.  Tiffany & Co. The scarf necklace is a clear example of Peretti's idea.  Instead of using stones or extra decoration, the design highlights movement, texture, and how the piece interacts with the body. The sterling silver version has the unique feel that made Peretti's work stand out in the 1970s and still feels modern today. Tiffany still makes the Mesh Scarf necklace, including a large sterling silver version about 41.5 inches long, showing how lasting the design is.
