Elsa Peretti's metalwork is legendary. Case in point: this vintage sterling silver mesh bib necklace. It's made up of what feels like a million tiny links, all working together to drape over your neckline like the chicest, shiniest piece of fabric you've ever seen. It moves, it shimmers, it's got that perfect weight—honestly, it's metal pretending to be silk and totally pulling it off.
In 1974, Peretti joined Tiffany & Co. and soon became one of the most influential jewelry designers of the late 20th century. When experimenting with flexible metal mesh, she drew on traditional metalworking techniques she had seen in India, especially in Jaipur, where she explored the possibility of making precious metal act like cloth. Unlike other designs that use gemstones or decorative elements, these pieces emphasize texture, engineering, and how the jewelry moves on the body.
The bib style gives this design a more dramatic look than Peretti's classic Mesh Scarf, but it still has the loose, sculptural feel that was typical of her work at Tiffany.
