Cartier took the humble safety pin and gave it the full jewelry treatment. It's oversized, in polished 18kt yellow gold, with a sculptural ribbon-like spiral wrapped around the center for a very modernist look. Honestly, all I see is charms and pendants hanging from it!

Cartier was already playing with everyday, utilitarian shapes back in the 1930s, and its safety pin brooches only got sleeker by the mid-century: strong gold forms, barely any ornament. This one is that design language exactly, signed and stamped with French hallmarks. A wonderful collector's piece.
