A clever Cartier piece that takes an everyday object and gives it the full jewelry treatment. Designed as an oversized safety pin in polished yellow gold, the center is wrapped in a sculptural, ribbon-like spiral that gives the piece a distinctly modernist feel. In my eyes, I literally see charms and pendants strung from it!
Cartier has a long history of playing with utilitarian forms, and safety pin brooches appear in the maison's designs as early as the 1930s. By the mid-20th century, these pieces became increasingly streamlined, with strong gold forms and very little ornament - exactly the kind of design language seen here. The result is simple, graphic, and unmistakably Cartier. A wonderful collector's item!
