A gloved hand in black enamel, holding a little gold flower with an old cut diamond at its center. Cartier, you charmer. Look closer and you'll find a rose cut diamond bracelet at the wrist and a bright red enamel cuff, exactly the kind of tiny detail Cartier loved to tuck in.
Cartier made a handful of "flower in hand" brooches in the late 1930s, playing with gold, enamel, lacquer, coral and diamonds. Ours is signed Cartier Paris and stamped Déposé on the back, meaning it's a registered Cartier design of the period (similar examples date to about 1938-1940). The flower is fully three-dimensional, so it really stands up off the hand.
Pin it on a lapel, a collar or a shirt pocket, or use it to keep a scarf in place. Definitely an IYKYK jewel.
