Made popular from the 40s to the 60s, these charms also served a practical purpose: women often traveled without wallets or purses large enough to carry cash. A hidden dollar — especially sewn or sealed into a charm — was considered emergency money: cab fare home, a phone call, or a small necessity if you found yourself stranded. The phrase borrowed directly from emergency signage of the era, which was becoming more standardized during and after WWII.
