The brooch, dating from the late Victorian period, features a ruby and diamond crescent beneath a single pearl, accented with graduated old-cut diamonds and rubies set in silver-toned settings.
Crescent brooches were particularly in vogue in the late 1800s because celestial designs were linked with transformation, new beginnings, and female strength. Typical of that period was the use of a combination of metals: silver was frequently used alongside diamonds to make them appear whiter. At the same time, yellow gold was included to add warmth and contrast. This is a super charming Victorian piece of jewelry, not to mention unique! A wonderful conversion candidate too.
