Struck from nearly pure gold, ducats first appeared in medieval Venice in the late 1200s, quickly becoming the international currency of choice for merchants, explorers, and anyone doing serious business across Europe and the Mediterranean. Think of it as the gold standard before there even was a gold standard.
This one appears to be an original from 1915, and depicts Franz Josef, Emperor of the Austro Hungarian empire.
