Serpent designs have slithered through jewelry history for thousands of years, making a bold statement in fine jewelry with deep symbolic meaning. In ancient Egypt, snake motifs were tied to royalty, protection, and eternal life. The serpent made a stylish comeback during the Victorian era—most famously when Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a snake-shaped engagement ring, symbolizing eternal love and commitment.
Since then, serpent jewelry has become a timeless icon in the world of antique and luxury jewelry. Iconic examples include Bulgari’s Serpenti collection—featuring gold serpent bracelets and diamond-encrusted watches, first introduced in the 1940s. Cartier also made headlines with a stunning diamond and emerald snake necklace for Mexican actress María Félix in 1968.
I might have just entered my serpent era with this piece - taking our stunning 4.12ct antique pear, designing a serpent heard around it, and attaching it to a vintage omega chain (beautifully crafted by H Stern!). The piece is one of one, mixing an ancient motif with antique and vintage materials and married by modern craftsmen. The diamond is a stunner - with its chunky facets and charming shape! The necklace sits beautifully just under the collarbone - no twisting nor turning. Just. Perfection.
