An antique carre-cut diamond that we, as an entire office, are quite taken with! She's a spready 3.63ct (with the measurements of a 4ct, if you ask us!) with great specs to boot. She's bright and prismatic, giving major step cut vibes in the best way. It has a great Maltese cross across the table and NO clipped corners, making it even more special. A very special stone indeed.
What exactly are carre cuts?
The carré cut is a true antique charmer, named after the French word for 'square.' These beauties first made their debut in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when cutters began experimenting with step-cut faceting to highlight the crisp, geometric shape. Unlike the glittery, fiery brilliance of modern cuts, carré cuts have a cool, architectural vibe—think clean lines, sharp corners, and those mesmerizing, mirror-like flashes of light.
Carré cuts are the great-grandparents of today’s princess and baguette cuts, but with a personality all their own. The real-deal antique carré has straight-step facets, sharp corners, and a proud, high crown—details that give off flashes of light that feel refined and quietly elegant, rather than all-out sparkle. Instead of a glittery show, you get these broad, graceful reflections—a soft, subtle glow that old cut lovers can’t get enough of.
Carré cuts really had their moment in the Art Deco era, when jewelry design was all about bold geometry and crisp, architectural lines. Think Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron—these houses loved to line up rows of carré cut diamonds in bracelets, brooches, and icy platinum settings, creating those sleek, seamless ribbons of light. Set snugly together in invisible or channel settings, they formed the sharp, linear patterns that make Art Deco jewels so iconic.
One of our favorite things about antique carré cuts is that each one was shaped and polished by hand, long before lasers and high-tech machines came into play. Every stone has its own little quirks—tiny variations in proportions or facet alignment—that give it a personality and charm you don’t find in modern, machine-cut diamonds.
Today, original antique carré cuts are true treasures for collectors and designers alike. Their rarity, storied past, and that unmistakable architectural beauty make them irresistible for anyone who loves the elegant, timeless style of early 20th-century jewels.
