The toi et moi ring—French for “you and me”—symbolizes the union of two souls through two stones set side by side. The design gained fame in 1796, when Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to Joséphine de Beauharnais with a ring featuring pear-shaped diamond and sapphire, delicately nestled together. At the time, this contrast was both personal and symbolic—representing two individuals, different yet perfectly matched.

While the style existed in earlier European jewelry traditions, Napoleon and Joséphine’s ring cemented the toi et moi design as a timeless emblem of love, balance, and partnership. Today, it remains a favorite among collectors and romantics alike—especially in antique and vintage rings, where each stone tells its own story and, together, creates something even more meaningful.
