What is a Peruzzi Cut Diamond?

The Peruzzi cut diamond represents a significant early development in the evolution of the modern brilliant cut.
Back in the late 1600s, Venetian cutter Vincenzo Peruzzi started playing with new ways to coax more sparkle out of a diamond, adding extra facets where earlier cuts kept things simple. Most diamonds then were table or rose cuts—pretty, but with a gentle, candlelit shimmer instead of the lively brilliance we crave today.
Peruzzi’s innovation was the development of a 58-facet cutting style, dramatically increasing the number of surfaces that could reflect and refract light. This design allowed diamonds to capture far more fire and brilliance, making them appear livelier even in low lighting such as candlelight—an important feature in the grand interiors of the Baroque and Rococo periods.
While Peruzzi’s cut wasn’t quite the mathematically precise modern brilliant we know now, it paved the way for the old mine cut and, eventually, the round brilliant. His work set the stage for centuries of diamond magic to come.
Peruzzi-style diamonds were predominantly featured in seventeenth and early eighteenth-century European jewelry, particularly in Venetian and later Georgian pieces, where their enhanced brilliance was highly valued by jewelers. Today, original Peruzzi cut stones are exceedingly rare and hold considerable historical significance, as they represent an early instance of diamond cutters intentionally optimizing light performance rather than merely shaping the gemstone.
For collectors and historians, the Peruzzi cut marks the beginning of the brilliant-cut lineage—a turning point where diamonds transformed from decorative crystals into the dazzling light machines we know today.
